When the world ended, we hid out in the basement for a few days—playing pool and my grandparents' old upright piano to keep our hands busy, because keeping our minds occupied was a lost cause. Hellish as the circumstances were, there was something heartwarming about it all, the way the foggy outlines of love show up most clearly in total darkness. I took some recordings on my phone to try to remember. In Matty's studio, a couple months later, we pulled at the seams, searching for meaning. I'm not sure if I ever found what I was looking for. It's been a year now and I can only hear the piano.
